Good to know before you book

Travel vaccinations are best sorted early. Some courses need two or three doses spread over weeks, and popular clinics fill up before summer and Christmas travel. A travel clinic will look at your destination, what you'll be doing there and your medical history, then recommend the jabs and antimalarials you actually need rather than everything on the list.

Pricing is per vaccine and adds up differently at every clinic. Typhoid and hepatitis A sit at the lower end. Rabies costs more per dose, and yellow fever is only available at registered centres that can issue the official certificate. Some clinics also charge a consultation fee on top, so check whether it's included. On Keystone, published prices for a typical travel consultation or single vaccine currently run from around £40 to £108.

Book at least four to six weeks before you fly if you can. Last-minute travellers aren't out of luck, since accelerated schedules exist for several vaccines, but you'll have more options and spend less if you sort it early.
