Good to know before you book

A private STI test is quick and confidential, and you don't need a GP referral. Most clinics can see you the same day or the next, the sample is usually a swab, urine or blood test, and results tend to come back within one to three days by text or secure email.

What you pay depends almost entirely on what you're tested for. A single chlamydia test sits at the cheap end. A full multi-infection panel covering HIV, syphilis, hepatitis and the common bacterial infections costs a lot more. On Keystone, published prices currently start at £20 for a single test and go up to £495 for a full screen.

Why go private? Speed and discretion, mostly. There's no waiting for a sexual health clinic slot, nothing goes on your NHS record unless you choose to share it, and if anything comes back positive the same clinic can usually arrange treatment. One thing worth mentioning when you book: if you have symptoms or a known exposure, say so. Some tests have a window period, and testing too early can miss an infection.
