A PET scan (usually combined with CT as PET-CT) shows how tissue is actually behaving, not just how it looks. That's why it's mainly used in cancer diagnosis, staging and treatment monitoring, with some use in cardiology and neurology too. It's a specialist test: you'll need a referral from a consultant, and because the radioactive tracer is made to order, appointments are scheduled rather than walk-in.
It's also one of the most expensive scans you can buy privately. Typical UK private prices run from around £1,200 to £2,500 depending on the tracer and the areas scanned. Most centres confirm the exact price at booking once they have the referral details, and the clinics listed here will quote when you enquire.
Plan for the appointment to take two to three hours. You rest quietly while the tracer circulates, the scan itself takes 20 to 40 minutes, and a consultant report follows within a few working days. If speed matters, going private typically saves weeks of waiting, which counts for a lot when treatment decisions hinge on the result.
