Good to know before you book

An osteopathy session uses hands-on techniques like joint mobilisation, manipulation and soft-tissue work to ease back and neck pain, stiff joints, postural problems and muscle strains. Your first appointment includes a case history and physical assessment and usually runs 45 to 60 minutes; follow-ups are typically half an hour.

First-session prices vary more between clinics than you might expect, mostly down to location and the practitioner's experience. Follow-ups are usually cheaper than the initial assessment, and once your treatment plan is set, some clinics will discount a block of sessions. Worth asking about.

Osteopathy is rarely available on the NHS, so most people pay privately anyway. The real choice is which clinic, not NHS versus private. Osteopaths are properly regulated (they must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council), you can book yourself in without a referral, and most clinics can see you within a few days.
