An MRI scan gives doctors a detailed look at joints, the spine, the brain and internal organs. It's the go-to test when you've got unexplained pain, a sports injury or neurological symptoms and you want to know what's actually going on. A single-area scan takes 20 to 45 minutes, and a consultant radiologist's written report normally comes as part of the package.
Prices swing more than you'd expect. They depend on how many areas are scanned, whether contrast dye is needed and where the imaging centre is, and the same knee scan can cost £300 more at one provider than another a few miles away. One thing worth double-checking before you book: make sure the radiologist's report is included in the quoted price, not billed on top.
