Good to know before you book

A private dental check-up is a proper look at your teeth, gums and mouth, usually including a soft-tissue and oral cancer check. Some practices offer the exam on its own, others bundle in X-rays and a scale and polish. If you're a new patient, expect a longer (and slightly pricier) first appointment than a routine recall.

What you'll pay depends on where the practice is, what's included and the kind of practice it is. High-street and chain practices generally charge less than boutique or cosmetic-focused ones. The main thing is to ask exactly what a quote covers: an "exam" at one practice might include X-rays that another bills separately.
